One Helluva Summer…
It’s only July 9th and the way this summer is going already has me irrationally angry.
Last week we had temperatures that broke records - between +30 and +40 degrees Celsius. We haven’t had rain in weeks. And we’re getting the smoke coming in from the BC wildfires which gives us that smokey, hazy sky.
The haying is done , which is unheard of. And we have about 30 to 40% of what we typically get every year. Canola flowered in the heat last week, which is far too early and likely going to result in very poor yields. Barley is not very tall - and we likely won’t get much or any straw off this year.
We’ve been watering the garden and berry patch with the water truck and dugout water (thank goodness!) but the heat has damaged leaves on potatoes, beans and such.
Our lawn is brown.
It’s depressing.
I really am hoping for some relief soon - a nice slow rain. But the forecast doesn’t look promising - more high 20 to low 30 degree weather… More heat. More damage. More stress.
We are not used to this type of weather up here and farmers are going to be suffering. I know at least 2 u-picks that are not going to be having u-picks at all. BC has fruit rotting on the trees because of the heat. Crop damage is all across the prairies - not just here.
It has not been an easy year and this…. is like kicking people when they are already struggling to get back up. Except none of us can do anything to stop or fix it. We cannot control the weather.
Hang in there everyone. We’ll get through this. We always do. Be kind to each other and show compassion to the farmers who are doing their best to get through.
